From Agency to in-house: Thomas’ Journey at Funnel
Thomas joined Funnel over two years ago as an SEO Strategist, bringing his extensive experience from the marketing world. In this blog post, Thomas reflects on his time at Funnel, his evolving role, and how the company has provided opportunities for growth and development. He also shares what his day-to-day looks like in his role and how he unwinds when he’s not working.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your role in the company and how you found Funnel?
I’m Thomas, and for the past two years, I’ve worked at Funnel as an SEO Strategist. Before joining the team, I spent about seven years in Amsterdam working with various marketing agencies. While exploring new opportunities, I came across an opening for an SEO Strategist at Funnel and decided to apply. Although, I was looking forward to working in-house instead of agency-side, I wasn’t entirely sure if I was ready to move from Amsterdam to Stockholm.
At the time, my partner had already relocated to Sweden, so during a visit to see her, I reached out to the recruiter and asked if I could visit Funnel’s Stockholm office. They agreed, and after meeting the team and experiencing the office culture firsthand, I knew it was the right fit. Shortly after, I accepted the role, and I haven’t looked back since.
How has your experience been after spending over two years at Funnel?
It’s been an incredible journey so far. Funnel has been a great place to grow professionally. The culture here is collaborative, and people are genuinely invested in helping each other succeed. What I love most is the variety in my work. When I first joined, I was mainly focused on SEO, but over time, my role has expanded. There’s always something new to learn, whether it’s working on web development projects or diving into advertising campaigns. It’s been a great place for growth and learning.
What does a normal day look like for you?
My day typically begins at 9:00 with a quick check-in on Slack to review any updates or tasks. By 9:30, my team and I gather for our daily stand-up to discuss ongoing projects, set priorities, and address any challenges we’re facing. We treat the website like a product, so much of my time is dedicated to optimizing it for both user experience and SEO.
Throughout the day, I often work with keyword research, data analysis, or collaborating with the content team and web developers. Whether I’m working to improve page rankings, enhance the user experience, or troubleshoot technical SEO issues, my days are a blend of strategic planning and hands-on problem-solving.
You came into Funnel as SEO Strategist but are pivoting more as a T-shaped marketer. Can you tell us a bit more about that?
When I first joined Funnel, my role was solely focused on SEO, but over time, I’ve had the chance to expand my skill set. In marketing, the concept of a T-shaped marketer refers to someone with deep expertise in one area—in my case, SEO—while also having a broad understanding of other marketing disciplines. That’s exactly what has happened for me at Funnel.
About a year into my time here, I expressed to my manager that I wanted to broaden my knowledge. Funnel supported me in taking a Mini MBA in Marketing, a 12-week program covering everything from market research and positioning to promotion strategies. This experience widened my perspective and allowed me to contribute in areas like content creation, advertising, and even product marketing. It’s been an exciting shift, and I’m truly grateful for Funnel’s commitment to continuous learning and development.
Lastly, when you are not thinking about marketing or SEO. What do you do?
When I’m not working, I love spending time with my partner and our cat, Otis. Exploring new spots around Stockholm and taking long walks are some of my favorite ways to relax. I’m also passionate about cooking, especially following recipes from Yotam Ottolenghi—I own all of his books, but “Plenty” is my favorite. One of my signature dishes is madeleines, which I’ve mastered over time. For me, cooking is not only a way to unwind but also a chance to get creative outside of work.
