Blending Code, Collaboration, and Music: Carl’s Journey
In this blog post, we sit down with Carl who has been at Funnel for the last eight years, to learn about his journey from working in Data Operations to becoming a Developer in one of Core Connector teams. Carl shares insights about his time at Funnel, the evolving nature of his role, and the collaborative culture that has shaped his career. We also dive into one of his passions—performing in the Funnel band…
Can you start by telling us a little about yourself and your background?
I’ve been at Funnel for eight years now. I joined the company in 2016 after a friend who already worked here referred me, so I got an interview. Back then Funnel was a much smaller company. There were only 20 people when I started, it was a very startup kind of vibe. I started out doing data entry, but over time, as the company grew and our needs evolved, we automated these processes. That’s when my role started to become more technical leading me to where I am today as a developer in one of our Core Connector teams.
What does a normal day look like for you and your team?
It depends on the projects I’m working on, but a typical day involves improving features for our customers. Whether it’s adding new fields, refining reports, or enhancing the user experience, I’m always focused on making things better. We’re a close-knit team, so there’s a lot of collaboration involved.
On support weeks, I handle customer queries and challenges. Recently, I’ve also been working on administrative projects, like cleaning up our internal systems to make sure everything runs smoothly. It’s rewarding because it ensures our processes are efficient and effective.
Can you share a recent project you worked on and what challenges you faced?
One of the more significant projects I worked on recently was transitioning Funnel from using Adobe Analytics 1.4 to Adobe Analytics 2.0. While they’re the same platform in name, the APIs are completely different, and we faced a lot of challenges getting everything to align properly. It was a complex task, but also a rewarding one. We had to figure out how to map the data and make sure everything worked seamlessly for our customers. It was interesting to see how much legacy code we dealt with during the process, but it felt great to modernize and improve our system.
What do you enjoy the most about working as a developer at Funnel?
For me, it’s a combination of the technical challenges and the company culture. I love finding solutions to problems, whether that’s discovering unusual aspects of a platform or troubleshooting something complex in the code. There’s always a satisfying moment when you solve an issue that’s been puzzling you.
But what I enjoy most is the supportive and collaborative environment at Funnel. The team spirit here is fantastic. Everyone is approachable, and I’ve grown so much by working alongside talented colleagues who are always willing to help and share their knowledge. That collaboration has been key to my development as a programmer.
You are famous at Funnel for being part of the Funnel band and performing at Camp Funnel, our yearly company off-site. Tell us more about how it all started!
It all started many years ago when our former CTO, Per Mellqvist, noticed that many of us were musicians. He suggested we start a casual jam session during lunch breaks. Every Tuesday, we’d gather in a meeting room to play music.
I hadn’t performed, or even sang much at all before joining Funnel, but one day I decided to join in, and I ended up becoming one of the singers for the group. When Camp Funnel came around, we decided to put together a full concert with 20 songs. I was nervous at first, but once we got on stage, it was completely natural. Singing and performing in front of so many people, it felt amazing. And then we did it again for the second Camp Funnel. It’s been an incredible experience, and I love that Funnel encourages us to pursue our creative passions alongside our work.
